From January 1, 2027, Overijse will transfer the management of its sewer system to Riopact, a collaboration between De Watergroep and Aquafin, to ensure quality and service provision and share costs.

Starting January 1, 2027, Overijse will adopt a new approach to its sewer system, with Riopact, a collaboration between De Watergroep and Aquafin, taking over management. This decision stems from the increasing complexity of sewer regulations and obligations. A joint approach was deemed necessary to guarantee quality and service. Furthermore, the current contract with Aquafin expires in May 2027. By partnering with Riopact, knowledge, costs, and responsibilities can be shared with approximately fifty other municipalities.
For residents, this means that sewer connections must be requested from Riopact starting January 1, 2027, instead of from the municipality. Riopact will also handle the execution and contractor selection. Residents with questions about their connection can still contact the municipal services for advice.
The sanitation contribution on water bills will increase. Overijse, which until now was one of the few Flemish municipalities not charging the maximum rate, must now take this step. This increase is necessary to remain eligible for subsidies from the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) for the construction of new sewer systems, which they consider a binding factor.
Through this choice, Riopact becomes the owner of the sewer network and takes over its management and responsibility. This ensures that the sewer system remains sustainable and affordable in the future. The municipality will continue to oversee the management and jointly determine priorities.
