The Municipality of Kortenberg has announced the results of the soil investigation at the Vannetelbosch site in Meerbeek. The findings, including a historical fill layer with debris and a limited asbestos zone, do not impede the planned redevelopment.

Previous investigations already indicated that the Vannetelbosch site in Meerbeek had soil contamination. To closely monitor this, the Municipality of Kortenberg, as the owner of the land, conducted a thorough investigation by accredited soil experts in the summer of 2026.
The investigation revealed a historical fill layer on the site, consisting of debris, brick, concrete, and other stony materials. Concentrations of mineral oil and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) were measured in this layer. This contamination is mainly located in the fill layer and not in the original soil. Earlier studies had already shown that this does not pose a serious risk to human health or the environment.
Additionally, a limited and clearly demarcated zone with asbestos-containing material was confirmed. This area has already been closed off and will be remediated safely and according to regulations. No asbestos concentrations above the applicable norm were found on the rest of the site.
The investigation results do not hinder the planned redevelopment of the site. However, they provide insight into the necessary measures to make the soil future-proof. A study bureau is currently examining, together with experts, the best approach in technical, legal, and financial terms, focusing on safety, sustainability, greening, and water management.
In the coming months, the investigation results will be translated into a concrete plan for the site, with safety, sustainability, and the high-quality development of the future green meeting place remaining central.
