Since October 1st, public lighting in Sint-Lievens-Houtem is back on every night, thanks to the switch to energy-efficient LED lighting and smarter management.

The municipality of Sint-Lievens-Houtem has implemented a new public lighting program this month. By fully transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting, the fixtures can now be managed more intelligently and controlled individually. This allows for a gradual adjustment of light intensity based on the time of day.
The new lighting schedule includes different intensity levels throughout the night: 100% from sunset to 7 PM, 75% between 7 PM and 10 PM, 50% between 10 PM and 11 PM, and 30% between 11 PM and 5 AM. From 5 AM onwards, the lighting is gradually increased until sunrise. This ensures sufficient illumination during peak hours while significantly reducing energy consumption during quieter periods.
This new dimming system achieves an additional annual energy saving of approximately 85,000 kWh, equating to over 25,000 euros per year. Beyond energy gains, LED lighting offers other advantages such as more focused and uniform illumination of streets and squares, enhancing comfort and the sense of security for residents and road users. The precise control of light also reduces spill light into homes, the night sky, and natural areas, contributing to the reduction of light pollution.
The new LED fixtures are equipped with smart communication modules, enabling remote management, adjustment of dimming levels, and faster detection of any malfunctions. Furthermore, LED luminaires have a significantly longer lifespan than traditional lighting, reducing the need for maintenance interventions.
Following the energy crisis, public lighting was turned off on weekday nights. Thanks to the complete switch to energy-efficient LED lighting, the streetlights can now, as promised, remain on every night of the week. The municipality is thus further investing in a sustainable public domain for its residents, maintaining adequate lighting for comfort and safety.
