In Zelzate, Fabriek Energiek 2.0, a new knowledge and meeting center focused on renewable energy, was officially opened on Friday, October 23rd, by Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, Terranova, and the citizen cooperative Zonneberg.

The new building, located at the foot of the Zonneberg, exemplifies circular, energy-efficient, and nature-inclusive construction, focusing on the transition to renewable energy. It serves as the provincial educational center, hosting over 150 schools and groups annually for guided tours and workshops, expanding upon the previous facilities in outdated office containers.
The multifunctional building provides more space for educational programs and demonstration projects. The original building, Fabriek Energiek 1.0, will be relocated and rebuilt in the Flemish Ardennes to serve as a creative space for individuals with disabilities. Deputy Dagmar Beernaert emphasized the importance of education in the energy transition, aiming to provide young people and adults with insight into the opportunities of sustainable energy and construction. The center also functions as a demonstration project for circular and nature-inclusive building practices for colleges, SMEs, and companies.
Terranova NV, a consortium of DEME, Jan De Nul, and Aertssen, invested in the building following the remediation of the former industrial site. The former gypsum mountain has been transformed into a solar park with 55,000 solar panels, situated within the port area of North Sea Port. Sofie Van Zele, spokesperson for Terranova NV, stated that the center aims to inspire students and companies towards sustainable entrepreneurship and modern technology. A wind turbine and a charging hub for electric trucks are planned for the site in 2027.
The citizen cooperative Zonneberg CV, also a participant in the solar park, acted as the client for the new building and seeks to enhance citizen involvement in the energy sector through financial participation. Chairman Frank De Mulder highlighted renewable energy as the future and expressed the cooperative's commitment to disseminating knowledge to increase support for the shift from fossil fuels to renewables.
The building, designed by architectural firm GAFPA and prefabricated by contractor Lab15, incorporates circular principles such as steel screw piles instead of concrete, reused wooden beams and facade cladding, and screwed components for easy disassembly. The exterior shell is insulated with cellulose. The building is largely self-sufficient, featuring a climate roof with a green roof and solar panels, a heat pump for cooling, and rainwater harvesting.
The project also includes nature-inclusive elements, such as nesting sites for birds and bats within the walls and roof canopy, and a green roof supporting diverse plant species. Stone gabions, a bioswale, and the screw pile foundation provide additional habitats for small mammals and insects.
Until the Crocus holiday, Fabriek Energiek 2.0 will temporarily host VITOpolis, an experience center focused on sustainable technology in the fields of economy, housing, fashion, and water.
