Following an initial survey with over 13,500 participants in 2023, the Pedestrian Barometer once again quantifies pedestrian experiences and desires. This allows for comparison with results from three years ago, offering concrete insights into what is working well, areas needing improvement, and how public space can be enhanced step by step.
Until October 31, 2026, the final day of the Month of the Pedestrian, citizens can share their experiences via the online questionnaire at voetgangersbarometer.be. The survey focuses on daily commutes, such as to school, work, or the shops, aiming to give walking more prominence in mobility and spatial planning policies.
The 2023 results clearly indicated a demand for increased safety, comfort, accessibility, and attractiveness of public spaces. Wider, well-maintained, obstacle-free sidewalks and connected pedestrian networks emerged as top priorities. Overall satisfaction scores were modest, averaging just over 10/20, highlighting significant room for improvement.
The second edition will update these findings and examine how the situation has evolved over the past three years. Citizens are encouraged to voice their opinions on whether public spaces are suitable for everyone, including children, the elderly, or people with disabilities, and on their sense of safety and comfort.
Local authorities are urged to actively distribute the survey. Municipalities receiving at least 50 responses will get a detailed report. All submissions from 2026 will be compiled into a national report for all of Belgium, highlighting regional specifics and developments since 2023.
The results of the Pedestrian Barometer will be published in early 2027. Participants have a chance to win prizes through a lottery.
