Following a successful first year where Poperinge earned the Reveil Comfort Municipality label, the comfort program is being further expanded. A group of residents, in collaboration with the city, has developed a varied range of activities and actions designed to create space for remembrance, encounters, connection, and comfort.
The program acknowledges that grief is a personal journey without a fixed path. It offers support through music, healing stories, and meditative concerts that can touch people in ways words cannot, serving as a source of comfort and connection.
Students from De Keiwijzer will once again assist in cleaning graves, a gesture of care for one another and for the memory of the deceased. De Lovie vzw provides specific support for individuals with intellectual disabilities or other vulnerabilities, helping them understand and express their feelings of grief.
The Belgian Red Cross Poperinge is organizing 'A Cup of Comfort' on October 31st at the Ter Ruste cemetery, offering a simple moment of coffee and conversation. Several initiatives from 2025 will continue, including the Grief and Loss Café, inspiring podcasts via the library, and comfort chairs at cemeteries, which will now extend to Roesbrugge.
New initiatives enrich the program, such as the 'Troostparel' (Comfort Pearl), a praline symbolizing grief and a glimmer of hope, with proceeds going to vzw Missing You. Additionally, there will be lectures by psychiatrist Uus Knops on 'Stress, Trauma, and Resilience,' and local comfort moments. The updated Comfort Guide and the 'Rouwkost' (Grief Food) meal service will also continue.
The program extends beyond October, with activities like World Candle Lighting Day and the Comfort Table in Reningelst planned for the autumn. A lecture on 'Coping with Grief' by Angelique Breyne and the unveiling of a new Comfort Tree are scheduled for May 7, 2027.
