The works on Adamstraat in Geraardsbergen, estimated to cost 600,000 euros and scheduled for completion by end of March 2027, have a dual purpose. First, a new, separated sewer system will be installed to address issues with the current system. Wastewater will be directed to a new wastewater pipe, while rainwater from at least the front half of the roofs will be connected to a new rainwater pipe. Following the sewer works, the street will be completely redeveloped, including the planting of trees to create a more pleasant, green environment.
Alderman for Public Works Veerle Mertens emphasizes the importance of the works: "The redevelopment of Adamstraat, along with the Kriebel parking lot, marks the start of our urban development plan. We are aiming for a city where cars, cyclists, and pedestrians coexist harmoniously. Adamstraat will thus have a sustainable future, both above and below ground."
Mayor Fernand Van Trimpont, responsible for Urban Development, adds: "We are taking another step towards a city where cars, cyclists, and pedestrians go hand in hand. Moreover, Adamstraat will now have a sustainable, promising future, both above and below ground."
The contractor will begin preparatory work in the first week, including setting up the construction site at the Stationsplein. The main sewer line installation will start from the Stationsplein side. Sidewalks will be maintained as long as possible but will be gradually broken up for house connections. Access to homes will remain guaranteed.
Motorized traffic will not be able to pass through Adamstraat during the entire construction period. A detour is established via Stationsplein, Lessensestraat, Groteweg, Astridlaan, and Oudenaardsestraat. Cyclists will follow a detour via Stationsplein and Oudenaardsestraat, in both directions.
Collection points will be set up at both ends of the street for waste collection. Residents will place their waste there, and the contractor will assist those who cannot. Residents were previously informed via a meeting, where they also received information about subsidies for private disconnection from the current system where rainwater goes to the sewer. For affected traders, a hardship premium is provided if they meet the conditions.
