Nieuwpoort, officially recognized as a City of Comfort in 2026, is continuing its commitment to remembrance and connection with a varied program for Reveil 2026.

Following its successful tenure as Reveil Capital of Comfort in 2025, Nieuwpoort is further developing a warmer mourning culture. The city was officially recognized as a City of Comfort on April 27, 2026, with signs at the entrance of the municipal cemetery marking this journey. This recognition stems from intensive collaboration with the vzw Reveil association and residents, focusing on connection, grief, and resilience.
The comfort policy, which first came to life extensively in October 2025, continues in 2026. The program includes creative workshops, meeting points, art, music, and quiet commemorations, aiming to make grief and loss discussable and to foster a visible culture of comfort in public spaces.
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, the municipal cemetery at Brugse Steenweg will host the Reveil Comfort Concert. Visitors can decorate a candle between 2 PM and 5 PM to place on the cemetery grounds. From 3 PM to 4 PM, Merel Forrest will perform music interspersed with spoken word, followed by a second musical moment by Lunacoustic from 5 PM to 6 PM. The concerts are free. Between 2 PM and 3 PM, and again from 4 PM to 5 PM, Radio Reveil will be broadcasting, allowing visitors to request songs.
On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, a children's film afternoon will take place at 2 PM in City, Valkestraat 18. Children aged 6 and up can watch the film Stories from the Magical Garden, followed by a craft workshop. Tickets cost 4 euros and are available via www.cultuurnieuwpoort.be or Toerisme Nieuwpoort.
On Tuesday, November 10, 2026, the municipal library at Kokstraat 18A will host the lecture Faith and Grief in Fishing. From 2 PM to 3:30 PM, NAVIGO guide Ariane Vyvey will discuss the folk and religious rituals, customs, and traditions that fishermen and their wives along the Flemish coast developed over the years to cope with the uncertainties and dangers of life at sea. The lecture is free for library members, and registration is possible via bibliotheek@nieuwpoort.be, tel. 058 22 30 40, or at the library desk.
The Reveil 2026 activities already began in October. On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the film Hamnet was screened. On Wednesday, October 7, and Sunday, October 11, 2026, residents could participate in the workshop Making a Flag Line, where fabric pieces from deceased loved ones were transformed into colorful flags. This flag line will be displayed at the municipal cemetery on November 1 as part of the Reveil comfort moment.
