Trees play a crucial role in creating a more pleasant living environment. They provide cooling on warm days, improve air quality, enhance biodiversity, and make neighborhoods more attractive. With this objective, Herent aims to increase the livability and climate resilience of the municipality.
Via the new tree counter on Herent Aan Zet, residents can easily register trees they have planted since the beginning of 2025 in their garden, on their property, or in an orchard. Municipal plantings will also be made visible on a map, providing an overview of the growing green infrastructure in Herent.
Furthermore, the municipality is calling on residents to help identify potential locations for new trees. Local knowledge is essential here to pinpoint areas that would benefit from more greenery, such as streets, squares, or neighborhoods needing more shade and cooling. This collaboration between citizens and the municipality aims to create a living environment where nature and community reinforce each other.
The launch of the tree counter coincides with the initiative celebrating 200 years of Veltem-Beisem. On the occasion of this anniversary, the municipality already distributed 200 free trees to residents, giving the festive year a sustainable character. These trees count towards the overall ambition of 23,000 specimens.
