The City of Bruges expresses its delight at the Flemish Government's intention to invest in the restoration of the Belfort. Flemish Minister of Immovable Heritage Ben Weyts aims to allocate €24 million for this iconic monument.

The Bruges monument is one of 5 heritage gems for which the minister intends to release this sum. The City welcomes this significant support for the preservation and future of one of its most iconic landmarks. The Belfort, an 83-meter-high tower dating from the 13th century and part of UNESCO World Heritage, attracts around 215,000 visitors annually.
The planned restoration includes both the interior and exterior of the tower. Additionally, necessary work will be carried out on the roofs and wooden structures of the Stadshallen (City Halls). The project aims not only to restore this mighty monument but also to improve the visitor route, enhance safety, and optimize access to the treasury, carillon, and carillon bells.
Bruges City has spent recent years developing a comprehensive restoration file, based on an approved heritage management plan. Thanks to Flemish support, the restoration of this monument can be further realized, ensuring the Belfort is preserved in good condition for future generations.
