Following a failed public tender in June 2026 for the organization of childcare initiatives 't Loavertje and De Duinpiepers, the local government of Blankenberge has decided to ensure continuity itself. This decision addresses the concerns of families who rely on these services.
From February 1 to the end of August 2027, the administration will manage the out-of-school childcare for 't Loavertje. During school holidays, the city will also expand the target group of Speelberge, making it accessible to younger toddlers. City departments are currently preparing the organization of out-of-school care and activities (BOA) from September 1, 2027. Further information on future operations will be communicated to affected families in due course.
For De Duinpiepers, the administration is exploring options to continue the service at a different location. However, an alternative building proved unfeasible. Therefore, the local government proposes making the first floor of the current building at Kerkstraat 424 available to childcare providers Rani Vantorre and Els Van Hoorickx. An agreement is proposed from February 1, 2027, to August 31, 2028, with monthly extension options until a new daycare center opens. This ensures that every child at De Duinpiepers remains welcome at the familiar location in the future.
The local government acknowledges the questions and concerns raised by families due to the cessation of the collaboration with vzw Felies. Childcare is a vital link in the daily lives of parents and children. The city is taking responsibility by implementing this temporary solution to keep De Duinpiepers running at its current location. Concurrently, the administration is working with partners to develop a solution for the out-of-school care service 't Loavertje.
