On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the municipality of Glabbeek approved and signed the extension of the Samen Actief voor Veilig Verkeer (SAVE) charter, emphasizing road safety for its youngest inhabitants.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the extension of the Samen Actief voor Veilig Verkeer (SAVE) charter from the vzw Ouders van Verongelukte Kinderen (OVK) was approved. The charter was signed for the municipality of Glabbeek by mayor Peter Reekmans, also chairman of the Hageland police zone, and municipal councilor Simon Vandermeulen (both Dorpspartij), who also chairs the municipal council's mobility committee. On behalf of OVK, it was signed by chairman Annemie Hemelaers and by police chief Kurt Marcoen.
In 2013, Glabbeek was the first municipality in Vlaams-Brabant to sign the SAVE charter, initiated by municipal councilor Simon Vandermeulen. Over the past 13 years, under Dorpspartij's policy, numerous measures have been taken for greater road safety, in close collaboration with the Vias Institute. Initiatives around schools were realized through participation with residents, the school community, and parent committees.
The municipal council approved the extension of the SAVE charter until 2029, with an official signing at the Glabbeek town hall. As a child-friendly municipality, Glabbeek considers the charter's renewal extremely important. The renewed charter continues to focus on road safety measures for the youngest residents, which will be implemented in the updated municipal mobility plan currently being drafted. With preparations for all roadworks included in our municipal multi-year road plan 2013-2033 nearing completion, there is a clear overview of all new road infrastructure planned for the village. The new mobility plan will also assess key points of our SAVE charter against the designs for new roads, footpaths, and cycle paths.

"Glabbeek was in 2013 the first municipality in Vlaams-Brabant and one of the frontrunners in Flanders to sign the Samen Actief voor Veilig Verkeer (SAVE) charter from vzw Ouders van Verongelukte Kinderen (OVK) on the initiative of municipal councilor Simon Vandermeulen - who himself lost his brother in a traffic accident. Over the past 13 years, under Dorpspartij's policy, many measures have been taken for greater road safety. For this, we have also been working closely with the Vias Institute (formerly the Belgian Institute for Road Safety) all this time. Several road safety initiatives we have already implemented, such as at schools, all came about through participation with residents, the school community, and parent committees."
