Provinciedomein Huizingen, in collaboration with Bosgroep Vlaams-Brabant, is developing a new forest management plan for over 55 hectares, focusing on biodiversity, climate adaptation, and recreation.
The province of Vlaams-Brabant has drafted a new forest management plan for the more than 55-hectare forest area of the Provinciedomein Huizingen. This plan, developed in partnership with Bosgroep Vlaams-Brabant, aims to increase biodiversity, better equip the forest against climate change, and maintain its recreational function.
The hilly forest area, which forms a significant green link in the region along with adjacent woodlands, includes ecologically valuable stands, characteristic spring flora, veteran trees, and habitats for protected species. The new plan outlines the long-term management vision, emphasizing more native tree species, the preservation of valuable and characteristic trees, greater biodiversity, and enhanced resilience to climate change impacts.
Beyond its ecological role, the forest also serves important recreational, social, and educational purposes. The management plan seeks to preserve accessibility and visitor experience without compromising the existing natural values. Deputy Ann Schevenels, responsible for the provincial domains, highlights that nature and recreation need not be opposing forces; through targeted and forward-looking management, ecological quality can be improved while continuing to offer visitors a valuable natural experience.
This forest management plan is a key component of the broader master plan for the provincial domain, currently in development. It integrates nature management, heritage, education, recreation, and future domain development into a single sustainable vision. Deputy Bart Nevens, chairman of Bosgroep Vlaams-Brabant, describes the forest as a 'characterful green lung' and emphasizes the deliberate choice for a future where nature, recreation, and climate resilience mutually reinforce each other.

"What we outline today must ensure that visitors can also enjoy a healthy, resilient, and surprising forest in 50 years."

"The forest of Huizingen is much more than a collection of trees. It is a characterful green lung and a place for relaxation, nature experience, and biodiversity. With this management plan, we consciously opt for a future where nature, recreation, and climate resilience strengthen each other."
