The urban development company sogent is launching an open call for a multidisciplinary design team to shape the renovation of the General Police Centre in Ekkergemwijk, Gent. The current police site is outdated, unsustainable, and not adapted to contemporary policing needs, making a thorough renovation necessary.
A previous feasibility study and development plan, prepared by FVWW Architecten and Palmbout Urban Landscapes, includes a new, larger wing, an underground car park, the renovation of the protected 'klooster van Deynze' and the old military hospital, a central access square, and new green zones. This plan will serve as the basis for the new design.
sogent coordinates the project and has extensive experience with complex urban development projects, including sites where heritage, contemporary architecture, and a new public function converge. The open call was published today via the website of the Vlaamse Bouwmeester. According to the current planning, construction works can start in 2030 at the earliest and will last approximately six years.
“"Our homework is done, now it's up to a design team to give it shape. This way, we take another important step in the realization of the new police headquarters."
