Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen launched the second episode of the podcast Nieuwdonk vertelt on Friday, October 30. In the episode Over vroeger (About the past), radio maker Sven Speybrouck and guide Jan Maertens take listeners through the history of the provincial domain Nieuwdonk and the Donk region.
For this episode, the Province collaborated with Regionaal Landschap Schelde-Durme and UNESCO Geopark Schelde Delta. Together, they bring the history of Nieuwdonk to life in an accessible way.

"Nieuwdonk is much more than a recreational domain. Behind the landscape lies a wealth of stories about nature, heritage, and life in the past. With this podcast, we make those stories accessible to our visitors. Thanks to the collaboration between various partners, we are bringing the past of Nieuwdonk back to life."
After a successful first episode about birds, listeners are now immersed in the past. The podcast explores how the pond was formed by sand extraction for the construction of the E17, which prehistoric animals were found there, and the role the Donkmeer, grasslands, and duck decoy played in the region's history.
“
"Mammoth bones have been found here, as well as bones of lions that lived in our region during warmer periods. We keep a part of these in the Ename Heritage Depot. The podcast briefly brings them back to life."
The podcast is designed as a listening walk on the domain. At various pillars, listeners can hear short fragments that correspond to their location. The pillars also feature old photos and visualizations of the former landscape.
The full episode can be found on the Nieuwdonk vertelt webpage.
On Sunday, November 15, you can participate in a guided podcast walk with guide Jan Maertens. Participation is free, but registration is mandatory via the Nieuwdonk domain webshop.
