Those wishing to bid farewell to a loved one on the Scheldt can now do so in various ways. In addition to the existing farewell and memorial site Memento Scaldis on the bank, 'Uit-Vaart' offers an overview of the possibilities provided by shipping companies for ash scattering on the water. This initiative is launched in anticipation of All Saints' Day on Sunday, November 1.
Alderman for cemeteries Ken Casier emphasizes the importance of original and tailor-made farewell ceremonies, combined with Antwerp's attachment to the Scheldt. "With Uit-Vaart, we bring both together," says Casier. "Not only will the urn be committed to the water, but the ceremony itself and the mourning meal can also take place on the boat. From a small boat for an intimate gathering to an authentic two-master in a historic setting, or the large, familiar boats of Flandria: everyone can find a personalized farewell." This offers Antwerp residents a unique opportunity to remain eternally connected to the Scheldt as their final resting place.
Several shipping companies offer families the chance to organize a farewell on the water, tailored to their wishes and the size of the party. Some packages also include a ceremony or a coffee reception. By consolidating the offerings, the city of Antwerp aims to inform residents and contribute to a meaningful, personal farewell.
More information about the offerings can be found at antwerpen.be. Entrepreneurs with similar ash scattering services on the Scheldt can contact the city for a listing on the website.
Memento Scaldis, the municipal farewell and memorial site on the Scheldt, is located at the Gerlachekaai near Lakenstraat. From the riverbank on the Scheldt quays, family members can bid farewell to their loved ones who chose the Scheldt as their final resting place.
