The city of Eeklo is investing €272,850 in healthy school nutrition, with financial support from Flanders and OCMW Eeklo to encourage students towards healthier eating habits.

Schools in Eeklo will receive €170 per student for the purchase and preparation of healthy food. In total, schools will receive €272,850, of which €218,270 is subsidized by Flanders and €54,580 is contributed by OCMW Eeklo. This initiative builds on existing projects like the ‘Oog Voor Lekkers’ subsidy, which already offered schools free fruit for 20 weeks.
The project encourages schools to expand their offerings with healthy snacks, breakfast initiatives, or enriched lunchboxes. The focus is on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein-rich products, prioritizing local and seasonal options. The goal is to make healthy food accessible to every child, contributing to equal opportunities and healthy development.
During a meeting with school directors, the ‘Gezonde Voeding op School’ (Healthy Nutrition at School) subsidy was presented. This initiative aims not only to strengthen existing efforts but also to encourage other schools to prioritize healthy nutrition, with financial support providing an extra push.
