The city of Dendermonde has unveiled a new design for the De Dammen inner courtyard, which will be transformed into a green and accessible meeting place.

The city of Dendermonde aims to revitalize the inner courtyard of De Dammen and transform it into a pleasant, green space where everyone feels welcome. The city thanks all residents who participated in the survey regarding the redesign. 26 online submissions were received, and during a physical participation event on August 7, 2026, approximately 30 local residents shared their ideas.
The survey clearly indicated that residents envision the courtyard evolving into a calm, green, and natural place. More shade, additional shrubs, and a flower-rich green landscape were the most frequently mentioned desires. Many participants also stated that the space should primarily be inviting for relaxation.
Based on this input, a design has been developed, starting from the most frequently expressed ideas. Considerations included available space, technical feasibility, and a high-quality layout of the square. The design seeks a balance between clean and organic forms.
In addition to the desired atmosphere, residents also emphasized the importance of good accessibility for everyone, including wheelchair users, and smooth passage for emergency services and removal vans. These points have also been taken into account in the design.
The execution of the renovation works is scheduled for the autumn of 2026. The city once again thanks everyone who contributed to the future of the De Dammen inner courtyard.
