Both Sint-Vincentius, which organizes food distribution among other activities, and the Welzijnsschakels, focusing on social interaction and support for residents facing difficulties, sought suitable housing. By bringing these two operations together, a warm and accessible space is created where residents can find material aid, social contact, and activities.
The new central location makes it easier to reach residents with questions or problems early on. Volunteers are close to the people and can more quickly identify when extra support is needed. If necessary, they guide residents towards professional services. Conversely, Sint-Vincentius and Welzijnsschakels also offer additional support to residents already receiving assistance, allowing professional help and volunteer work to complement each other.
Nele Gutschoven, Alderman for Poverty and Equal Opportunities, highlighted the importance of this sustainable location: “Here we support a sustainable place where food distribution and social interaction come together. For and by volunteers. In this way, we are working towards a more robust poverty policy in Pelt.”
The building on Sellekaertsstraat is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. There is ample space for various activities, and a large sectional door is important for loading and unloading goods for the food distribution. The opening date will be determined later in consultation with the volunteers.
