The greening of Genk-Centrum, specifically the Grote Markt, has secured the very first Architectura Award in the Green-Blue category.

The redevelopment of the Grote Markt in Genk, completed in 2024, is recognized for its addition of more greenery, shade on warm days, and improved rainwater absorption. This approach has created a greener and more pleasant public space for residents to enjoy terraces and for children to play.
The design, which also benefits rainwater infiltration, was created by landscape architect Bureau Bas Smets, who collaborated with the city of Genk on the market square's transformation.
The Architectura Award, a national architecture prize that received over 400 project submissions, acknowledges the impact of this initiative. The award in the Green-Blue category highlights the successful integration of ecological and aesthetic elements.
