On Saturday, October 17, the anniversary of the world-famous painter will be celebrated with a festive academic session in the church of Grote-Brogel, starting at 1:30 PM. Historian Jo Corstjens and linguist Fons Tuyaerts will shed new light on Bruegel's history during this session, based on their recent research which resulted in the book "Pieter Bruegel the Elder. A Hidden History". This richly illustrated book will also be available.
Visitors can also explore an exhibition of cartoons and a selection of works from the Bruegel Museum in the church. Expert guides will provide commentary on the exhibited pieces. At 3 PM, a historical procession will depart, featuring the centuries-old schutterij Sint-Sebastiaan, heading towards Dorpsstraat. There, a monument in honor of Bruegel will be unveiled. During a lively evocation, Bruegel and his contemporaries will make their voices heard.
After the unveiling, the celebrated painter will be honored at the Brueghelheem. Everyone is welcome to join this celebration. For those who register in advance, the Gezinsbond is organizing a tasty food and drink walk with a Bruegel theme.
On Sunday, October 18, there will also be plenty to experience. The exhibition in the church remains accessible. Wandel Mee Bruegel is organizing a walking tour from the Brueghelheem. Between 2 PM and 5 PM, guided walks through the beautiful ‘Bruegelland’ will also depart.
