Starting Monday, October 12, renovation work will commence on Kerkplein in Neerpelt Centrum. The square will be transformed into a green oasis with the Dommel river as a central element, and better prepared for climate change.

The renovation of Kerkplein in Neerpelt Centrum begins on Monday, October 12. The project has a dual purpose: to better equip Neerpelt Centrum against the increasing challenges of climate change and to create a square that offers enhanced atmosphere and experience, contributing to the strengthening of the commercial core. The current grey square will become a green oasis where the Dommel river plays a central role.
From Thursday, October 8, the square will be closed to traffic to allow the contractor to set up the construction site. Alternative parking facilities are available within walking distance, including the underground parking Forte, parking Bermstraat, and the parking at the Talentcampus (Hoekstraat).
Concurrently with the square, the adjacent section of Pastorijstraat will also be closed. Consequently, through traffic from Pastorijstraat to Kerkstraat will no longer be possible. Pastorijstraat will remain accessible for local traffic in both directions. In the section of Kerkstraat between Pastorijstraat and Broesveldstraat, only local traffic will be permitted in both directions. Residences and businesses will remain accessible at all times. The glass recycling containers will be relocated for the duration of the works to the former Aldi site on Leopoldlaan. The entrance to De Stroming will remain accessible as no works are being carried out there. The drop-off box on the side of Kerkplein will also remain accessible.
The Dommel river will feature a meander on the square. Its banks will be connected by a lowered bridge that will flood during high water levels. Near the bridge, the Poermenneke, a bronze statue by Lou Boonman depicting the age-old method of catching eels on the Dommel, will also be reinstated. The majority of the square will be designed as a green space, sunken into the landscape to function as a natural water buffer during periods of flooding. Under normal circumstances, the square will serve as a green lung in the center.
The works are scheduled to last until the summer of 2027. After the renovation of Kerkplein, and following the renewed Marktplein, Neerpelt Centrum will gain another engaging public space, which will undoubtedly also boost surrounding businesses and hospitality.
