With a tailor-made neighborhood project, the local government of Mortsel, together with vzw Klimaatwerf, aims to help residents take concrete steps towards more energy-efficient, comfortable, and greener homes. The project, which starts from the neighborhood's needs, arose after several sessions with residents about the challenges in Luithagen. Two main themes emerged: more support for renovations and more greenery around homes.
Residents see potential in green facades as a solution for cooling and are requesting practical renovation advice and group offers. Energy-efficient renovations not only reduce energy consumption and costs but also increase living comfort and make homes more resilient to challenges like warmer summers and rising energy prices. Greening also contributes to a pleasant, climate-resilient living environment, helps limit heat stress, and improves water retention.
At the end of June, the neighborhood project officially kicked off with an information evening where about sixty residents received information about renovation and greening opportunities. This interest has translated into concrete actions: 10 percent of the residents of Luithagen ordered plants for the group purchase of climbing plants and ground cover.
On Thursday evening, October 8, vzw Klimaatwerf will organize a demonstration workshop on creating a facade garden. Participants will receive a step-by-step plan to get started at home. On October 10, the ordered plants will be distributed, including necessary tools and soil.
Through this project, the local government of Mortsel and vzw Klimaatwerf aim to support residents in taking concrete measures, so that individual interventions can collectively contribute to a greener, cooler, and more energy-efficient neighborhood.
