Jolien Claes, a biologist with a master's in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management, joins Nationaal Park Bosland as the new science coordinator. She brings experience from ecological research, science communication, and project coordination, gained during international expeditions where she managed research projects and translated scientific knowledge for a broad audience.
Within the park, Claes will contribute to the further development of the scientific branch as a catalyst for research. The focus will be on strengthening collaboration with researchers and knowledge institutions, supporting research and monitoring, and collecting and disseminating knowledge about nature and landscape. The Operational Plan also includes the development of a multidisciplinary Scientific Board, a mobile lab, a research database, and citizen science initiatives.
This work extends beyond the borders of Nationaal Park Bosland by connecting with international networks, such as the European Horizon project SELINA. Through this approach, Claes aims to further develop the park as a 'Living Lab' where research actively contributes to protecting and strengthening nature. Organizations, researchers, schools, and volunteers can contact her for matching research questions and finding academic partners.
Raf Truyens, chairman of Nationaal Park Bosland, emphasizes that Claes not only brings scientific expertise but is also skilled at connecting people, research, and practice. Her experience at the intersection of science, research, and communication will be crucial for translating scientific insights into nature management and for communicating with partners, residents, and visitors.
With the arrival of Jolien Claes, the team of Nationaal Park Bosland is now complete. The team consists of Pieter Cox (Nature, space, climate and environment), Jeroen Clerix (Communication), Jolien Claes (Science), Mieke Bex (Manager), and Ward Segers (Tourism and recreation).
