The new pontoon at the pond in Antwerp's Stadspark was ceremoniously inaugurated today. Students from nearby schools attended the opening. With this new structure, the city and the district of Antwerp are taking a significant step in revaluing the park.
The wooden pontoon, located on the side of Quinten Matsijslei, extends over the bank and onto the water. It connects to the park's play and sports zone, expanding the active area while preserving quiet spots in the middle and southern sections.
Alderman for public domain and green spaces Ken Casier emphasized that the pontoon creates new space, especially during higher water levels. "With the construction of the pontoon, we are creating new space in the park so that all visitors can find a pleasant spot," he stated. The restoration of the island and the banks contributes to better living conditions for fauna and flora, enhancing biodiversity in and around the pond.
The pontoon is part of the Stadspark Redevelopment Plan. Previously, the green strip along Van Eycklei, the playground, the connecting path between Rubenslei and Quinten Matsijslei, the island, and the circular water system were renewed. The square in front of the War Memorial for the Fallen also recently received a new layout.
District Mayor Paul Cordy indicated that most major interventions in the park are now complete. The water feature in the square for the War Memorial for the Fallen will be operational from spring 2027. The contractor is completing the redevelopment of Louiza-Marialei by early 2027. The third and final phase of the redevelopment plan, including the renewal of remaining paths, new furniture, and refreshing existing flowerbeds, will start next year.
The initiative for the redevelopment plan originated in 2019 following a meeting with local residents, the city, and the district. After a participation and information process, adjustments were made to the plan. The final works in small phases will commence in the autumn of 2027.
