The province of Limburg presented its Space Pact 2040 on October 15th to GECORO members, who received the vision and concrete actions for spatial policy with great enthusiasm.

During the first information evening about the Space Pact 2040, the attending GECORO members showed much enthusiasm. They gained insight into the main principles of the provincial spatial policy and how this vision is translated into concrete actions for housing, open space, mobility, energy, and economy.
Central to the pact was the principle of 'doing more with less space,' with attention to spatial quality and the unique character of each municipality. Different administrative levels work together, each from their own responsibility.
The province explained how this collaboration is taking shape, including a practical guide for municipalities to typify and delineate local cores, and an assessment framework for housing developments. From mid-November, consultation moments per regional housing market will also start to address supra-local housing issues.
Other actions from the Space Pact 2040 were also discussed, such as an energy map for the spatial integration of large-scale renewable energy and a cycling test to structurally include cycling in spatial plans. The LIMPACT project call supports initiatives for vibrant urban and village centers.
For open space, integrated area visions and action plans are being developed, such as for Rekem-Opgrimbie and the Southern City Edge of Maaseik. Trajectories for Stadsbeemd in Halen and the Canal Split in Tessenderlo-Ham have been initiated.
In terms of economic space, the province focuses on a spatial shift by making better use of existing business parks and relocating legally offered sites to better-located areas. Integrated area visions are being developed for three focus areas.
To share results and tools with a wider audience, the province organizes free lunch webinars. The next webinar on October 20th will focus on the cycling test and will take place from 12:00 to 12:45 PM.
The GECORO members gained insight into the steps already taken to implement the Space Pact 2040 and the ongoing or further prepared actions, providing inspiration for shaping their own policy plans with a clear strategic vision and concrete actions.
