During the Dutch Language Week, the city of Beringen has initiated a project to provide residents with more opportunities to practice Dutch. The city, home to over 89 different origins, aims to ensure that Dutch is not a barrier but a tool for full societal participation. This initiative is supported by a project subsidy from the Flemish Government for language education.
Alderman for Talent, Ann-Sofie Vanoverstijns, highlighted the importance of these efforts, noting that over 2400 children and young people grow up in households where Dutch is not the primary home language. The additional funding allows for the expansion and increased accessibility of existing programs for youth and adults through various locations and methods.
The new brochure gathers all practice opportunities in one clear overview. Residents can find activities for young children and families, specific practice sessions for youth, and courses for adults. It serves as a practical guide, also for schools that can use it to refer students and parents needing extra support.
The brochure was presented today at the library and will also be introduced at the Inloophuis tomorrow. Further details are available on the city of Beringen's website.
