The municipality of Hoogstraten is initiating a procedure to clear graves at the local cemetery to ensure capacity for new burials.

The available capacity at the cemetery is nearly exhausted. Therefore, the municipality is investigating which graves are eligible for clearance. This will ensure sufficient space for new burials in the future. A similar procedure was previously carried out at the cemeteries of Hoogstraten and Meer. The city council aims to manage the various cemeteries equally and carefully.
The clearance procedure will be conducted with due respect for the deceased and their relatives. The dossier will be presented to the municipal council on October 26, 2026. Following approval by the council, legal notices will be posted at the affected graves and at the cemetery entrance.
Relatives will be given ample time to be informed of the procedure and to remove any personal belongings from the graves. After the procedure is completed, the names of the deceased will continue to be commemorated at the cemetery.
