Dieter Coppens encourages Flemings to plant a tree, emphasizing its ecological advantages. "A tree is a powerful air conditioner: it provides shade, cools its surroundings, absorbs CO₂, retains water, improves soil, and is a giant animal hotel. And it doesn't even need a power outlet!" Coppens stated. He added that even a small tree can fit in one square meter, and that "every tree counts."
Coppens references the call from minister Jo Brouns to cities and municipalities to plant more trees. Organizations like De Bosalliantie facilitate new plantings, including on private land. "Hopefully, we are just in time," Coppens remarked, referring to the recent summer being described as the coldest of the future.
For those looking to start, Coppens recommends planting a tree, shrub, or hedge during the winter months. Instructions are available on www.boomjetuin.be. Plantings can be registered at boomjetuin.be/doe-mee to contribute to the tree counter for the municipality or city. Participants have a chance to win a birdhouse from Coppens.
