The City of Antwerp has launched a new action plan to promote gender equality among young people. The plan includes free training, workshops, and guidance for youth workers, as well as activities for all Antwerp residents and a call for role models.

The growing gap between boys and girls, traditional gender roles, and the influence of social media are creating new challenges for young people. To help youth workers navigate questions and tensions surrounding gender equality, the City of Antwerp is offering a free program of training, workshops, and guidance. Antwerp residents can also participate in activities and apply to be role models.
Through social media, young people are increasingly exposed to diverse and sometimes extreme ideas about masculinity, femininity, relationships, and sexuality. In Flanders, the differences in views on gender equality between young men and women are becoming more pronounced. Traditional gender roles are gaining influence, and some young men are showing increased resistance to gender diversity and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Online communities like the 'manosphere' and 'femosphere' spread ideas about gender and relationships, with some messages reinforcing stereotypes and creating division.
These developments are also felt within youth work. Youth workers encounter a wide range of opinions, hurtful remarks, and tensions among young people. Simultaneously, they play a vital role in making difficult topics discussable and creating an environment where all young people feel safe and welcome.
The City of Antwerp, in collaboration with organizations such as Punt vzw, Pimento, the Hannah Arendt Institute, Sensoa, Tumult, Bazzz, and ZIJkant, has developed a free support program for professional and volunteer youth organizations. Youth workers can choose from webinars, training sessions, and workshops on topics including gender diversity, polarization, relationships, sexuality, and dealing with resistance. For example, they will learn how to respond to negative statements about LGBTQIA+ individuals, how to discuss relationships and boundaries, and how to establish clear agreements to prevent boundary-crossing behavior.
Youth organizations can request free support until November 9 via the city's website. Additionally, the city is collaborating with organizations like Bazzz and Iedereen Divers to work on equal opportunities in Antwerp schools.
“

"Antwerp does not look away. Unfortunately, figures show that fundamental values such as gender equality and equal rights are under pressure in our society, due to phenomena like the manosphere and other extreme ideas. We can and will never accept that. With this new action plan, we are therefore making concrete efforts in awareness, education, and safe spaces where young people, among others, can be themselves. Together with fellow alderman Karim Bachar, we are bridging equal opportunities and youth, so we can reach them even better in their world. We continue to build a city where everyone can freely dream, love, and be themselves."

In addition to the program for youth workers, Antwerp residents can visit the free exhibition 'Niet mijn keuze' (Not My Choice) at the City Hall and Central Station until November 16. This exhibition invites visitors to reflect on forced marriage, abandonment, and freedom of choice. The exhibition is open daily at City Hall from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and at Central Station from 4:00 AM to 12:30 AM. An accompanying program of activities is also available.
The City of Antwerp is also seeking Antwerp residents to serve as role models who wish to share their experiences with gender equality. In 2027, these role models will have the opportunity to inspire others with their stories. Interested individuals can register for the project via the city's online form.
