The former Sacred Heart Church on Adegemstraat in Mechelen, transformed into the cultural hotspot and meeting place mARTa, has been nominated for a Matexi Award.

mARTa, an initiative developed with input from local residents, is competing for the Matexi Award, which recognizes the most unifying community projects in Flanders. The organization behind mARTa is calling for votes for the public prize, which includes a €16,000 reward. Voting is open until November 16, with the results announced on November 19.
Starting January 2027, the temporary bar at mARTa will be renovated. Students from CVO Crescendo, including furniture makers, interior designers, woodworkers, welders, and electricians, will collaborate with local residents to transform the space. Elements from the church, such as confessionals, pews, doors, and wooden panels, will be given a new purpose.
