Dr. De Weer, who served as a surgeon at Imelda Hospital from 1972 to 2004, is being honored for his exceptional career. At the hospital, he was instrumental in establishing the Emergency Department and mentored numerous young surgeons during their internships. However, his societal involvement extended far beyond the hospital's walls.
In 1981, he took a significant step into international development cooperation with a medical mission to Cameroon, which contributed to the founding and growth of Doctors Without Holiday. For many years, he continued to participate in medical-surgical missions, sharing his expertise, training local healthcare professionals, and strengthening health systems. His final mission took place in 2020.
His dedication has received national and international recognition, including the title of Knight bestowed by King Filip. Even today, Dr. De Weer remains actively involved in the care center where he resides, encouraging fellow residents and fostering community.
Through this honorary title, the Bonheiden local administration recognizes not only his professional career but, more importantly, his enduring societal commitment that transcends age.
