Over 150 young people in Genk have received help from Riet in recent years, who volunteers as a homework tutor and finds it very energizing.

Riet studied nursing but worked in education for years. When volunteers for homework assistance were sought in Genk, she didn't hesitate. “I had wanted to do volunteer work for a long time,” says Riet. “Something with a positive approach, in a pleasant environment. This work aligned perfectly with my interests; I immediately found it very enjoyable. Once a week, for an hour and a half, I dive into the world of young people.”
During the sessions, Riet works in small groups with various volunteers. She primarily focuses on language and subjects like general orientation, as she is less confident with numbers. Together, they review homework and tests to identify areas for improvement.
To make the young people feel at ease, Riet listens attentively and encourages them. She emphasizes that they face many challenges and that an open attitude fosters a strong bond. One boy even asked her to help him with homework at home because he understood it much better when Riet explained it.
After more than 20 years of volunteering, Riet finds working with young people and witnessing their progress incredibly energizing. Although it can be challenging at times, the work doesn't feel like an obligation, and she can focus on her strengths. She is eagerly looking forward to assisting primary school children soon.
