In Baarle, the first Maintenance Week officially commenced on October 12, 2026, an initiative by Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen and Monumentenwacht Nederland.

The launch of this new action week took place at the inn De Swaen, a property known in both Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau as the house with two house numbers. The location, situated on the border, was symbolically chosen to highlight the cooperation between the Dutch and Flemish Monumentenwacht. The protected monument recently acquired a new owner who intends to restore the property.
The Maintenance Week aims to convince heritage owners and managers of the importance of preventive maintenance. Throughout the week, in collaboration with various heritage partners, dozens of activities are organized. These include study days, workshops, webinars, and networking events addressing diverse topics such as cleaning gutters, facade insulation, and the maintenance of chapels, mills, organs, and funerary heritage.
Regular maintenance, such as clearing gutters, repairing leaks, or painting woodwork, is crucial for keeping heritage in good condition and avoiding costly restorations. This action week rightly shines a spotlight on this essential work.
