During the visit, the museum also welcomed British Ambassador Anne Sheriff and British Defence Attaché Col. Nick Thom. Curator Freddy Jones provided the guests with an in-depth look into the history of occupation and liberation in the Zwinstreek region during 1940-1945. A significant part of the tour focused on the Battle of the Scheldt Pocket, also known as Operation Switchback, which will be commemorated for the 82nd time in late October and early November.
This battle claimed the lives of no less than 1000 Canadians and Allies, and the hundreds of civilian casualties were also remembered. During the lunch at restaurant De Kruier, Mayor Cathy Coudyser presented the guests with a memento from the For Freedom Museum and the Canada Committee.
The visit was described as a memorable day for the For Freedom Team and a grateful farewell to a governor who clearly has a fondness for Ramskapelle.
