To reduce the waste mountain and achieve the Flemish environmental objectives, several important changes will be implemented in waste collection in Oudenburg starting January 1, 2027. The municipality aims to significantly reduce the amount of residual waste together with its residents. Therefore, residual waste will be collected every two weeks from 2027, and a switch to containers will be made for GFT (green, fruit, and garden waste) collection.
Currently, the municipality produces an average of 146 kg of residual waste per inhabitant per year. This figure is targeted to be reduced to 90 kg, the Flemish objective. Proper sorting helps achieve this. Less frequent collection of residual waste also encourages residents to sort more consciously and prevent waste.
Specifically, the following changes will occur: from January 1, 2027, the grey household waste bag will be collected every two weeks. Residents can consult the new waste calendar or the Recycle!-app for the correct collection dates. For individuals with urgent residual waste needs (e.g., diapers, seafood), underground waste containers will be installed. The first two containers will be located at the parking lot of KWS Oudenburg and the market square of Westkerke. Residual waste can also be collected here for a fee.
For PMD (packaging waste), paper, and cardboard, nothing changes; these waste fractions will continue to be collected weekly at home.
The weekly GFT collection will be maintained, but the yellow GFT bag will be phased out. From January 1, 2027, vegetable, fruit, and garden waste will be collected weekly using a 25-liter container. Every resident can request a GFT container from the end of 2026 via the website of the waste intermunicipal company IVOO. The annual subscription costs 26 euros, with a one-time deposit of 10 euros. For this annual contribution, the container will be emptied weekly at no additional cost. If a container is damaged or lost, it will be replaced according to the deposit conditions.
Residents who still have GFT bags left can use them up in 2027. New bags will no longer be sold from 2027.
