The City of Nieuwpoort has installed metal handrails along the stairs of the tribune in The City, its cultural venue in Nieuwpoort-Stad. This intervention, costing 4,215.64 euros, addresses visitor requests and enhances safety and comfort.

The City, operational since October 2013, had relatively steep stairs leading to the tribune, posing a challenge for the elderly and less mobile visitors. The new handrails now provide additional support and stability.
“

"The City has been an important venue for cultural experiences in Nieuwpoort for over ten years. We believe it's crucial that visitors not only enjoy a performance but can also move safely and comfortably through the building. With the new stair handrails, we are addressing a specific concern raised by visitors. It's a relatively small intervention, but one that can make a significant difference for many people."

The design for the handrails originated from the senior council, via Mr. Frank Gunst, chairman of OKRA Nieuwpoort. The total cost for the modification amounts to 4,215.64 euros, including VAT.
This investment aligns with Nieuwpoort's broader ambition to enhance the accessibility of its leisure offerings, as outlined in the strategic multi-year plan 2026-2031.
“

"Accessible leisure offerings also mean we pay attention to the practical barriers people may experience, especially seniors. Sometimes these involve major interventions, but often a targeted adjustment can already make a significant difference. By installing the handrails, we are making the City's tribune safer and more user-friendly for everyone. This ensures that age or limited mobility does not form an unnecessary obstacle to participating in cultural life in Nieuwpoort."
