The ecological condition of the pond in Park Mariënstede shows positive developments thanks to the completed works, with the presence of various algae species and decorative algae.

A detailed analysis of the aquatic life in the pond of Park Mariënstede and a nearby ditch, conducted by WVI, sheds light on the ecological health of the water. The results, reflecting natural development after recent works, are promising.
In the ditch, 22 different species of organisms were found, a significant increase compared to the 13 species in the pond itself. The notable presence of various decorative algae, which thrive in clear and relatively clean water, indicates improved water quality.
Particularly noteworthy is the discovery of two rare green algae species in the pond: Ankyra ancora and Korshikoviella michaelovkaensis. These species, not previously recorded on waarnemingen.be, point to the exceptional ecological value of the pond. Further research will determine if they are indeed new species for Belgium.
Despite the positive findings, areas for attention remain. The pond is still influenced by nutrients, originating from falling leaves of surrounding trees, droppings from waterfowl, and accumulated organic material. This promotes the growth of species typical for moderately nutrient-rich water.
One species of blue-green algae was also detected, but there is no cause for alarm. There was no harmful algal bloom, and the identified species is not known to cause health problems.
The study emphasizes the importance of well-maintained surrounding water bodies. The gradual drying out of the moat during summer negatively impacted the ecological quality. The works carried out on the pond are a significant step in restoring the water system, offering hope for the further development of natural values in Park Mariënstede.
Continuous monitoring of water quality, paying attention to factors such as leaf fall, siltation, and waterfowl populations, remains crucial for the pond's further development into a healthy and biodiverse aquatic environment.
