The City of Bruges has replaced the outdated fit-o-piste in the Veltembos with a modern obstacle and calisthenics course, featuring 10 new sports equipment units accessible for free to all athletes.

The 10 new sports equipment units are designed to help visitors work on their strength, balance, and fitness, suitable for both recreational and experienced athletes. The former fit-o-piste was popular for many years, but due to intensive use and exposure to the elements, the equipment had become heavily outdated, necessitating a thorough renovation.
The new course combines obstacle elements with calisthenics, where athletes primarily use their own body weight to strengthen muscles and improve their fitness. The equipment offers exercises for various muscle groups, training strength, stability, and body control, among other aspects.
The combination of cardio, strength, stability, and balance exercises contributes to a healthy lifestyle and helps maintain fitness and independence, a point also emphasized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for healthy aging. Through this accessible outdoor sports infrastructure, the City of Bruges aims to encourage residents of all ages and fitness levels to be more active.
For the purchase of the equipment, the City of Bruges utilized the framework agreement ‘Calisthenics’ from Sport Vlaanderen, allowing local authorities to acquire quality outdoor sports infrastructure under favorable conditions. KOMPAN NV is responsible for the installation. The total project cost amounts to € 35,884.61. The signage will also be renewed with an overview plan at the start.
