Gemeentebestuur Beernem

The municipality of Beernem has adjusted the timeline for the remediation works at the old brickworks in Kleiputstraat. Preparatory works will now last until May 2027, with the site to be afforested in the autumn of that year.

DEME Environmental has been commissioned by NV Steenbakkerijen Oedelem to remediate the soil of the old landfill. This involves applying a sealing layer and drainage layer over approximately 3 hectares, followed by a rooting layer for the municipality to plant a forest.
The preparatory works, requiring significant truck transport, will commence in the week of March 16 and continue until May 2027. Freight traffic will avoid the center of Oedelem as much as possible. Trucks coming from the E34 will approach via Maldegem (Hoogstraat), while those from the E40 will use the Hoornstraat in Beernem to reach Den Hoorn and the brickworks. During school drop-off and pick-up times, they will bypass the school environment of De Zonnebloem in Beernem, routing via Sint-Joris to Den Hoorn.
The afforestation of the site is scheduled for the autumn of 2027.
