Yesterday, on World Osteoporosis Day, the new service was officially announced. Osteoporosis, also known as a 'silent disease', weakens bones and is often only discovered after a fracture occurs. The new service aims to address this by not only treating the fracture itself but also by tackling the underlying causes of falls and fractures.
"As a hospital, we want to do more than just cast or operate on a broken bone. While the fracture itself is well taken care of, the real reason for the fall or fracture has until recently been looked at too little. With our fracture prevention service, we want to detect and treat this underlying cause in a timely manner,” stated dr. Katleen Jegers, medical coordinator FLS and Geriatrician at AZ Jan Portaels.
The service focuses on the prevention, detection, and follow-up of patients with an increased fracture risk, marking a significant step forward in bone health care for the region.
