The municipality of Ternat has once again received the 'animal-friendly municipality' recognition for the coming year. This distinction, awarded by the province of Flemish Brabant, acknowledges the municipality's concrete commitment to animal welfare.
The municipality has several commitments in this area. For instance, there is a deputy responsible for animal welfare and a dedicated contact person within the police zone. Furthermore, Ternat implements an active stray cat policy, in collaboration with a recognized animal shelter.
To reduce nuisance from dog waste, the municipality provides free dog waste bags. Residents can also obtain a free pet sticker at the reception of the town hall. Regular information on animal welfare is disseminated, and the municipality consciously opts to permit only low-noise fireworks, out of respect for animals.
The province of Flemish Brabant has updated its approach to animal welfare to address current needs. Criteria that are now legally regulated, such as the ban on selling companion animals at markets or fairs, will be removed. In their place, new focus points will be introduced, including awareness campaigns on rat control.
