The towpath along the Demer river between Betekom and Aarschot is once again fully accessible for walkers and cyclists, following the lifting of the temporary diversion for works on the Grote Laak.

These works are part of the Sigmaplanproject Demervallei. The aim of this project is to reconnect historical meanders with the Demer, giving the river more space to flow naturally. This contributes to increased water safety, better water quality, and additional opportunities for nature development in the region.
The new connection between the Demer and the Grote Laak is a significant step in this project. By reconnecting old watercourses, rainwater is better retained during heavy rainfall, creating a stronger and more resilient river landscape.
