In the VTM series ‘De Inspecteurs’, viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at diverse inspection services. Twelve inspectors from various backgrounds travel through Flanders and beyond to check compliance with regulations. They visit numerous locations, including at sea, where fishery inspectors Peter and Kimberly work together to ensure adherence to the common fisheries policy and sea fishing rules.
The Agency for Agriculture and Fisheries collaborated on the first three episodes of the series. Inspectors Peter and Kimberly not only demonstrate the technical aspects of a fishery inspection, such as checking nets, logbooks, storage, and catch registration, but also highlight the reality on the ground: working at sea, dealing with limited communication, changing weather conditions, cooperation with other European authorities, and contact with fishermen and crews. Collaboration with other Coast Guard partners is also featured.
“"This series shows how our fishery inspectors work professionally and meticulously every day. Controls are essential for a balanced and sustainable fisheries policy. Thanks to ‘De Inspecteurs’, the general public gains a better understanding of why fishery controls are necessary: they help combat overfishing, support more sustainable fishing, and ensure rules are applied correctly and fairly."
‘De Inspecteurs’ aired from September 17 to October 22 on VTM 2. The full series is still available for viewing on VTM GO.
The Agency for Agriculture and Fisheries is a proud partner of the Coast Guard, working with other coast guard partners for a safe and healthy North Sea. More information can be found at kustwacht.be.
