The municipal primary school GBS Blokbos Lot and the out-of-school childcare center Malleboot in Beersel have completed a significant transformation of their outdoor space. The former, largely paved playground has been de-paved and redesigned into a green learning and play environment. This renovation, which involved removing no less than 9,000 tiles, addresses the challenges of a warmer climate and the well-being of the students.
The redesign now includes more greenery, shaded areas, and natural play elements. The de-paving created space for trees, plants, and a pond, contributing to cooling, biodiversity, and improved play quality. Various departments of the local administration collaborated on the realization of these outdoor zones, following the earlier renovation of the school buildings and childcare facilities.
The renewed playground is designed as a dynamic environment that can continue to grow and be adapted. It now combines functions for playing, meeting, and learning, with facilities such as an outdoor classroom, additional benches, an obstacle course, and a football field.
According to the school management, the new setup has a noticeable positive impact on the students. "We notice significantly fewer conflicts," says Vandebempt. "The children's enjoyment and general well-being have clearly increased. This makes the investment particularly valuable."
Beersel also encourages residents to participate in tile-wiPPing through the Flemish Championship Tile-wiPPing. Each removed tile helps combat waterlogging, heat, and drought. More information and tips can be found at www.beersel.be/tegelwippen. During the campaign period, the municipality also organizes a monthly tile taxi for free collection of removed tiles and rubble upon registration.
