The final section of the Firtelbrug, a steel structure measuring 52.3 meters long and approximately 4.5 meters wide, weighing around 100 tons, was placed in its final position in Zulte on Saturday, September 26, 2026, using a floating crane. The bridge deck was previously welded together at the quay in Sint-Baafs-Vijve by bridge builder CSM and then transported to its destination by the floating crane ‘Antigoon’ from Eiffage/Herbosch-Kiere. The lifting operation commenced around 7:00 AM.
With the bridge now complete, the finishing phase can begin. This includes welding the joints between the bridge and the abutments, applying the final road surface, and installing the railings. Additionally, the connections of the approach ramps to the existing paths need to be constructed. Crossing the bridge will be possible from late December at the earliest. The final completion is scheduled for the spring of 2027.
Maxim Veys, chairman of the board of directors of De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, highlighted that the bridge will contribute to more sustainable travel between the two riverbanks. The project is part of the Seine-Schelde network, aiming to optimize inland navigation between the North Sea ports and the Paris region. Specifically, the bridge connects the center of Zulte with the cycle highway F371 Deinze-Wervik on the other bank, and it also serves as an enhancement for recreational and sports users of the towpaths.
A rest area will be established on the approach ramp on the left bank, offering a place for walkers and cyclists to relax with a view of the Leie surroundings. It will provide seating and bicycle parking facilities. Mayor Simon Lagrange of the municipality of Zulte noted that this 'experience point' at height will surely be utilized by locals and visitors exploring the area.
The bridge also restores a historical connection between the town center and kasteel Te Lake, which disappeared when the Leie was straightened.
The investment of 5.86 million euros (excluding VAT) in the Firtelbrug is a project by De Vlaamse Waterweg nv and the municipality of Zulte, co-financed by the European Union and the province of Oost-Vlaanderen.
Filip Boelaert, managing director of De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, mentioned that several investment projects for the Seine-Schelde network are currently underway in Zulte. Alongside the new cycle bridge over the Leie, the riverbanks are also being renewed to promote the development of fauna and flora in and along the water.
The name 'Firtelbrug' refers to a popular local folklore procession. The name was officially established by the municipal council following a consultation with residents.
Alderman for Public Works Sophie Delaere expressed satisfaction with the smooth progress of the works and looks forward to the moment when the bridge can be crossed.
