During the 2026 Enforcement Week, Wetteren municipality, together with OVAM, worked towards a clean and pleasant living environment. This year's focus was on youth litter and proper waste disposal during the week, and on glass bank sites as fly-tipping hotspots during the weekend.
From Monday, October 5th to Friday, October 9th, 82 public bins in the town center and around schools were cleaned by municipal services. Additionally, community guards, accompanied by police, were present daily at various hotspots where young people gather. The emphasis was on prevention and awareness, engaging with youth about the importance of a clean environment and correct waste disposal.
During the awareness campaigns, community guards approached a total of 75 individuals. The correct behavior of 43 people (57.33%) was appreciated, while 32 people (42.67%) were addressed for leaving their waste behind where they were sitting. Following checks on 'snack routes' from school to home, information sessions were held in participating secondary schools, explaining waste processing timelines, enforcement services, and how classes could organize their own litter campaigns.
Over the weekend, the municipality organized an action at various glass bank locations. Community guards raised awareness among passers-by and users about correct waste sorting and presentation. Citizens who sorted correctly could receive a gadget, and about twenty sorting bags were distributed during this event.
Community guards continue to pay daily attention to litter and fly-tipping. Citizens interested in a gadget are encouraged to approach them to collectively ensure a pleasant and clean Wetteren.
