On Wednesday, October 28, the Lanaken-Maasmechelen Police Zone (Politie LaMa) officially inaugurated its new headquarters in the historic 'Les Grands Bureaux' building at Heufkensweg 4 in Eisden-Maasmechelen.

The 1911 building, with over 115 years of history, will now serve as the central hub for various police services after its renovation. This centralization replaces the outdated offices on Koning Albertlaan and Dr. Haubenlaan in Maasmechelen, aiming to enhance collaboration and efficiency.
The renovation preserved the monumental character of the former mining building, respecting its original structure and layout. The main building houses services such as emergency response, neighborhood teams, detectives, and administrative support, and is not accessible to the public. A modern, single-story entrance portal with a reception area and interview rooms for citizens has been added at the front.
The complex is equipped with modern technologies including ventilation, heating, and cooling systems, fire detection, an emergency generator, and solar panels. Alderman for heritage, Daan Deckers, highlighted the focus on insulation, energy performance, and security.
Corps Chief Ronin Cox stated that the new facilities improve collaboration and information exchange among staff and provide space for future service development. Mayor Raf Terwingen added that the project fulfills the core objective of the police zone merger: ensuring equal police care for all residents and giving a new purpose to a historically significant building.
For residents, the move signifies a more modern and efficient service environment. The police office in Lanaken will remain operational for its neighborhood team, traffic service, and other support functions, thus combining a central headquarters with a continued local presence.
Administrative services have already relocated; other departments, including emergency response and reception, will follow in November. The complex will be fully operational by the end of November. Further information on opening hours and services will be available on the Politie LaMa website and social media, as well as municipal communication channels.
