The junction of Oosterlaan with the R42, a key connection between Stationsplein, the Elisabethwijk, and Vijfstraten, has been redesigned. The previous spacious layout of the intersection resulted in long crossing distances for cyclists and pedestrians. The new, more compact design shortens these distances and enhances visibility.
Significant changes have also been made near Solidaris. The pavement has been widened, and the cycle path now connects closer to the intersection, allowing cyclists to cross more directly and over shorter distances. The pedestrian crossing has also been relocated to a more logical position directly in front of Solidaris.
The right-of-way rules at the intersection remain unchanged. Traffic signs and new road markings clearly indicate priority.
Further improvements have been made along the rest of the Oosterlaan. The bus stops at Paterskerk and Solidaris have been adapted to meet the accessibility guidelines of De Lijn. Parking spaces have been widened, and tactile paving has been installed for visually impaired individuals. New bicycle racks have also been added near Solidaris. Finally, the street has received a new asphalt top layer and updated road markings.
The works are now almost entirely complete. Green accents will be added to the intersection at the end of November, without requiring the Oosterlaan to be closed again.
