In emergency situations like cardiac arrest, quickly finding an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is crucial. These devices can save lives by delivering an electric shock and provide spoken instructions, making them usable by individuals without medical training. Red Cross Flanders is asking residents of Sint-Niklaas to proactively check the AED devices in their vicinity.
The appeal focuses on verifying the presence of the devices, the accuracy of registered locations, and their accessibility. Citizens can perform these checks using the free First Aid app from Red Cross Flanders. Each verification contributes to a more reliable map of available AEDs, which is essential when every second counts.
Currently, there are 68 AED locations registered in Sint-Niklaas on the Red Cross Flanders map. Only 21 of these locations (30.9%) have been confirmed by at least three people, making the information reasonably reliable. Another 29 locations are awaiting additional confirmation, while 47 locations (69.1%) still need a third validation. This does not necessarily mean the devices have disappeared, but rather that the information about their location and accessibility is not yet sufficiently verified.
Residents are encouraged to check the AEDs in their area during their daily activities, such as a walk, lunch break, or after sports. By opening the AED map in the app, confirming the data, or submitting corrections, they help maintain an up-to-date overview. Even if a location has already been checked by others, an additional confirmation remains valuable.
New AED devices not yet on the map can also be added through the app. Checking these life-saving devices can make a critical difference in an emergency situation.
